Tutored Still Life Painting Class
Course Outline:

The goal of this class is to take the students through the process of constructing a representational style still life painting using a tonalist approach to painting

The students will be tasked with producing a series of smaller studies of the still life, which will inform the final larger still life painting.

The studies include:

  • Pencil drawing (approximately A4 in size)
  • Value study in oil on canvas (same size as pencil drawing)
  • Transfer drawing (approx A2 in size)
  • Final painting in oil on canvas (same size as transfer drawing

Tools that will be covered include

  • Gesture
  • Shape
  • Proportion
  • Value
  • Colour
  • Edges
  • Handling of materials

Some short demos will be part of the class, and every student will receive individual critiques every class from the two tutors.

Date: 20th July to 21 September, 2019 (every saturday for 10 weeks)

Time: 2.30pm to 5.30pm (3 hours per session)

Location: Studio 1310, Malvern (above Senior Art Supplies)

Limited numbers: 12

Course Fee: 10 weeks $490

Causual rate:  $70 one 3 hour session

About the tutors -  Nicolas Chen and Robert Kelly

Though primarily an oil painter, Nicolas Chen works in a variety of mediums including watercolour, gouache, dry media and digital.

A graduate of the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.

Nicolas has returned to his hometown of Melbourne to continue his work as an artist and to share the knowledge and experiences gained from his atelier style training, through his teaching. 
Nicolas has been awarded various scholarships and achievements over the years, including the A.M.E Bale travelling scholarship Major Award in 2018.

Robert is a professional practising artist.

He was the principal instructor at The Florence Academy of Art, drawing and painting from 2014-2018.

He was also a workshop instructor for the 6 week intensive drawing/painting courses at Florence Academy in 2017-2018

Robert has a good knowledge of traditional materials and techniques.
